This
marked the inaugural game for the Barbarian Vets side, which is the second
Veterans side within the club. The first half was pretty chaotic as most players
had not taken part in a game since last season, and few had played together
before. Ashbourne ran in 5 run away tries without response.
However
as the second half progressed, Derby started getting their act together and put
in some good driving mauls, and stretched the Ashbourne defence with good
linking runs from the backs.
Derby
scored first with a well taken try from full back Paul Swanwick. Paul was
unlucky later when he took the ball over the line for a second time amidst a
maul of players, but the touch down was unsighted by Tosh Swan our referee.
Ashbourne
scored again, but this was replied with Derby's second try, this one coming
after prolonged pressure, with the ball eventually spinning down the line for
Carl to score on the wing.
So
Ashbourne won the first half, Derby won the second half. A good days rugby was
had by all, and a new platform for Veterans rugby has been launched at the
club.
Special
thanks to several Leesbrook players who made up the numbers for Derby.
