Leaden skies and
drizzle greeted Derby UKD’s return to Haslams after the Christmas break. The
Haslams faithful were keen to see their final present of the festive season :
South African centre, Pieter Prinsloo. A late change to the starting line up saw
Eldon Atherton replace Owen West.
Melton Mowbray kicked
off, but it was Derby UKD who quickly took charge and the lead. 8 minutes had
gone when the pack drove over the line and Kirk Ashan scored his fourth try of
the season. From the kick off, John
Heggie raced deep into the Melton 22 and found Paul Burrows. A try looked
certain, but the ball went forward and the chance was lost.
Two Brett Beckham
penalties increased the Derby UKD lead. Between these, Melton missed a penalty
chance of their own. Two minutes before the
break, Derby UKD scored an excellent try. Rod Muir took a high clearance and
fed Paul Burrows. Paul Burrows broke and chipped ahead. Pieter Prinsloo
confirmed that he has pace by leading the chase, taking the ball and sliding
over the line for a debut try. Given that he had already made a couple of
cracking tackles, it was a very satisfactory debut !
Half time saw Derby UKD
in control, 16 – 0 to the good.
The second half developed
into a dour battle. Melton used their forwards and put Derby UKD under
pressure. The defence was not found wanting. The clean sheet is testimony to
the determination Derby UKD showed; it is hard to remember a missed tackle. The
only score of the half arrived after 52 minutes. It was very similar to the
first score of the day, but this time Eldon Atherton was the scorer.

Brett Beckham added the conversion, leaving the final score 23 – 0 to
Derby UKD.
This was a satisfying victory, the conditions made for a scrappy game
with the ball appearing to be a bar of soap at times!
Derby UKD will face stiffer challenges in the months ahead, but two more
points have been successfully collected!
Come on Derby UKD !
