Match 1: Derby 2 - 1 Harrogate

First match of the season and what a start they made.  All the training came together enabling the first try to be scored by Jack O’Callaghan.  The rucks and mauls surged forward gaining much ground allowing the ball to be passed out to Kit MacDonald who then went on to score Derby’s second try in the first half.  Second half Derby still played some excellent rugby but Harrogate managed a try in the last few minutes.  Excellent start to this tournament.

Match 2: Otley 3 - 0 Derby

Having watched Otley in the previous match Derby knew they had to perform well.  Derby started off well but did not perform as in the first match allowing Otley to score the first try.  Otley were a strong team in this game not giving way to Derby in the scrums or line-outs.  Otley went on to score a further two tries leaving Derby feeling very disappointed with their performance.

Match 3: Derby 0 - 0 Percy Park

Percy Park were in the lead at this stage in the competition and Derby knew they had to win to stay in the competition and go through to the semi-final.  Derby fought well and won their balls in the line-outs coming so close to scoring a try.  Percy Park had to play hard to hold the Derby team back but unfortunately Derby just ran out of time.

Derby just missed out on tries scored in the tournament leaving Otley and Percy Park to go through.  The Under 10’s can be proud of how they played today especially being their first tournament of the season.

Well done lads and keep up the hard work!

Team:  Kit MacDonald, James Fish, Tom Taylor, Tom Morgan, Louis Johnson, Gabriel Beresford, Drew Farquharson, Henry Szymdt, Jack O’Callaghan, Charlie Storr, Jacob Watts

2nd Oct'05: Kesteven Festival Report

Derby 2 v 0 Melton Mowbray

A good start to the tournament. Derby piled on the pressure with committed tackling which paid off when they got possession and ran in 2 tries in the second half  from Jack Webster and Alex Todd. George Pedley held the forwards together well in their first experience of competed scrums.

Derby 0 v 4 Newark

Derby conceded a soft try in the first minute of the game and never really had any possesion as they struggled manfully to contain a confident Newark side. Good tackling and determination was shown by the whole team as they worked for each other in defence.

Derby 1 v  3 Sleaford

Derby took the lead in the first half when John Watkins went over in the corner in an evenly matched contest. Good work by Josh Davies and Declan Willis kept Sleaford out on the try line and there was good covering by James Allen, George Hobson and Sam Hughes as they bundled players into touch. Derby were failing to hold onto their possession though and Sleaford managed to come back into the game in the second half running in some long range tries.

Derby 4 v  0 Nottingham

Derby showed good character to bounce back from two defeats and were well up for this contest. Derby tackled the powerful Nottingham players well and were always in control. George Boden grabbed two tries with silky running and George Hobson was well fed by George Burke to score. Jack Webster, showing strength and pace ran in his second try of the tournament.

Many thanks to all the parents for their support and encouragement.
