Presentation Day took place today, here's the list of
awards and photographs of
the players receiving their awards.

30th May'09 -
It's
Quiz Night at Haslams on Monday 1st June'09 at
8:30pm -
Entry fee is £1 per person with a maximum of 6 people per
team. Also on a Monday it's Specials night where you can enjoy a Meal and a drink

23rd May'09 - The 5th Annual
Halfgallathon takes place at the Lathkil Hotel at Over
Haddon on Saturday 6th June, at 3pm, with all proceeds going
to Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield.
|
Founded by Bakewell Mannerians
hooker AJ Hall - himself a patient of Weston Park - the
Halfgallathon has quickly become established as a must-do
event on the local calendar and has gone from strength to
strength. Since its inception the Halfgallathon has raised
no less than £6,000 for Weston Park.
The event features 2 races - an
Individual Challenge and a Team Relay - and competitors can
enter either or both. What they have in common is that each
race involves running (or walking) four laps of the road
around the Lathkil Hotel - taking in the famous views en
route - with a pint of local ale on each lap. And with this
years Halfgallathon being sponsored by both Peak Ales and
Whim Brewery, the standard of beer promises to be better
than ever. |
 |
There are prizes for both races
and also for best fancy dress - as well as all sorts of
other attractions including the chance to win a fantastic
Rally Day. Regular competitor and previous fancy dress
winner, Dicky Sherwood of Bakewell RFC, commented:
"The Halfgallathon is always a marvellous afternoon out, and
supporting Weston Park Hospital is something that is very
important to so many people. In the past, if my memory
serves me correctly, I've dressed as Roly Birkin QC, The
Scarecrow off Wizard of Oz and that Scary Butler off Scooby
Doo - amongst other things. I'm itching to get back in my
dressing-up box for this year's event."
For entry forms, please contact Alice Grigor-Taylor at the
Lathkil Hotel, on 01629 812501 - or entries are very welcome
on the day.

17th May'09 - The John Dickens House
- Geoff Pugh writes "Those of you who attended the lecture by
Pam Dickens and Richard Karran of Chellaston School last year, will
recall the work being done for the orphans of 'The John Dickens
House' in Uganda, by the staff, sixth form students, Pam and
Richard. The school are sending another party to Uganda to continue
the good work in July and I intend to commandeer a changing room at
Haslams in which we can store things which are desperately needed.
These can then be transported to Uganda freely as they will be
recognised as a charitable donation.
Things that are needed are as follows:
Toiletries, single bedsheets, pillow cases, curtains and small toys
such as 'Dinky' cars or equivalent which can be wrapped to give as
Xmas presents to the children. Even if you have only one of the
above list please donate it, since multiplying by ten or twenty will
make it part of a significant contribution to these little children
with nothing.
I shall be at the Rugby Club at 7.30pm
until 9pm on Thursday evening 14th May, 28th May and then each
Thursday after that until the group leaves for Uganda in July. My
telephone number for any further information is 01159 302480. Please
call me if you have difficulty with Thursday night and we can
arrange something else to suit you. Best regards, Geoff Pugh.

For some time Derby RFC has
had in place a draft Whole Club Development Plan (WCDP)
which various people have spent a lot of time on. The RFU
now has a prescribed process in place for the creation of a
WCDP. This involves the following steps:
An internet based Questionnaire for all club members to fill
in (over 3-4 weeks).
A period consolidating the
Questionnaire results in order to identify aspects of the
club's operation that the Questionnaire responses have
indicated require attention.
A facilitated WCDP Workshop to
discuss these aspects and identify possible actions to
resolve.
Preparation of the WCDP and
associated Action Plan.
Review and submission of the
WCDP to the RFU.
Please take a few minutes to
complete the Questionnaire, it should take only a few
minutes. In order to ensure that your responses are included
in the analysis you must have completed the form on or by
4th March 2009 (3 weeks prior to the planned workshop date
on 25 March). Responses made after that date cannot be
included and analysed.
The questionnaire has been
emailed out to people within ALL areas of the Club, if you
haven't received an email you can access the questionnaire
online from within the Derby RFC website by
clicking here - please
note that this is a password protected area, Colin
Cornfield, Graham Darby, Paul Fish and the Seniors Team
Captains have the password, please contact anyone of them
for it.
In a few weeks we will indicate on the website who is
attending the Workshop. If you have burning issues you wish
to be raised, please let one of the Workshop attendees know.

21st Jan'09 - You may be
aware that the Club has been seeking planning permission
for new floodlights that can be used (on limited occasions)
on the 1st XV pitch and also provide much needed additional
training lighting on the area between Pitch 1 and 2.
Planning permission was granted recently but with conditions
attached that means the club will have to find significantly
more money to its contribution than was originally
envisaged.
Coupled with this the Credit
Crunch is affecting the Rugby Club Bar / Restaurant business
just as it is many others businesses in the UK.
So how can you help?
Well the club will be putting in place specific fund raising
projects which no doubt you will assist with in some form,
but additionally you could:
1. Try to make more use of the club bar / restaurant. For
example:
a. There is a Monday Night offer of drink and one of 8 meals
for £5.
b. On Wednesday after Junior training there are attractive
family meal deals
c. On Sunday after M&J matches / training there is a full
menu available
d. Stay longer at the club on Saturdays
e. Take part in the monthly Quiz (1st Monday of month)
f. Bring a friend with you next time you attend the club
g. Distribute some of the fliers that have been printed to
your neighbours
2. Make sure you have fully paid your subs and pay match
fees where appropriate.
3. When given some RFU Draw tickets to sell, please do so
quickly, return the money and if possible sell some more.
4. Consider (with others?) organising a “Floodlight Appeal”
fundraising event.
Please do what you can to assist the club over this period.

5th Jan'09 - Bob Broomhall of
Romsey RFC has written to the Club making us aware of
the recent loss of EB Jackson. Bob writes "I thought some of
your older members might wish to know of the death at the
age of 90 of EB Jackson (Jacko) who came down to Hampshire
and played for the Winchester club from the late fifties.
Previously Jacko had been a member of the Derby Rugby Club
and had been a stalwart of The Notts Lincs and Derbyshire
County side. Although he must have been nearing 40 when he
joined Winchester he established a reputation as probably
the strongest prop in Hampshire and remained so for about
the next ten years. I remember that he broke a leg when he
was about 42 but was fit and ready to play again the next

11th Dec'08 -
Derby are away to Leighton Buzzard this Saturday 13th
Dec'08 in a Midlands Two East fixture which is the 'replay'
of the game that took place on the 4th Oct'08 due to the RFU
ruling that because Derby had gone to uncontested scrums,
then we would have to return to Leighton Buzzard to replay
the game. Similarly the Newark v Ampthill fixture is being
replayed on Saturday for the same reason in that Ampthill
had gone to uncontested scrums.
With Derby on 2
points and Leighton Buzzard on 4 points it's an important
game for both sides, here's how the lower half of the
Midlands Two East table
currently looks prior to Saturday's fixture.
